Compare Common Tow and Trailer Configurations

Seven original field cards show what can be observed, recorded, and verified. Their diagrams are conceptual—not official class tables and not a substitute for current operator guidance.

A passenger car or crossover supplying power.
Trailer or Towed Vehicle
A small empty or loaded utility trailer.

Observe the passenger vehicle axle lines and the trailer’s actual road-contact layout.
Plates Present
Separate plates may be present; do not submit their numbers here.
Possible Transponders Present
Inventory the device in the powered vehicle and any device inside carried equipment.
Questions to Verify Before Travel
Is the trailer attached for both legs? Does its axle layout differ from the last trip?
Records Worth Keeping
Private side image, general date/route, load state, and attachment time.
What Changed From a Normal Trip
A rolling unit and coupling have been added to a normal passenger trip.

Scenario 02

Pickup + Boat Trailer

CONFIGURATION STUDYVISIBLE AXLES · 4
Pickup + Boat TrailerConcept diagram — not to scale
Powered Vehicle
A pickup or other tow-rated vehicle providing power.
Trailer or Towed Vehicle
A boat resting on a purpose-built trailer.
Visible Axles
Document the road-contact axle lines of the pickup and trailer assembly—not the boat itself.
Plates Present
The tow vehicle and trailer may have separate plates. Keep any identifying details in your own records.
Possible Transponders Present
A device is commonly present in the powered vehicle; still inventory any device left in another transported unit.
Questions to Verify Before Travel
Is the trailer single or tandem axle? Does the return trip have the same load state? What current operator guidance needs confirmation?
Records Worth Keeping
Private side-view image, launch or pickup time, load-state note, attachment time, and trip reference.
What Changed From a Normal Trip
A seasonal trailer and its road-contact axle lines have been added to an otherwise familiar vehicle.

Scenario 03

SUV + Camper

CONFIGURATION STUDYVISIBLE AXLES · 4
SUV + CamperConcept diagram — not to scale
Powered Vehicle
A sport-utility vehicle providing the power and primary driver position.
Trailer or Towed Vehicle
A travel trailer or camper coupled behind the SUV.
Visible Axles
Record the SUV’s road-contact axle lines and the camper’s actual single- or tandem-axle layout. The example drawing is not a count for your trip.
Plates Present
The powered vehicle and camper may each display separate registration plates; note only whether separate plates are present in your private record.
Possible Transponders Present
A device may be mounted in the SUV. Check whether any other device remains inside the camper or another carried vehicle.
Questions to Verify Before Travel
What is the camper’s actual axle layout? Has the complete combination changed since the last trip? Which operator-specific device guidance applies?
Records Worth Keeping
A full side-view photograph kept privately, general travel date, attachment time, and a plain-language combination description.
What Changed From a Normal Trip
The SUV is no longer traveling alone; a second rolling unit, a coupling, and additional road-contact axle lines are present.
Before

Walk around the full combination.

At connection

Record the physical relationship.

After change

Scenario 04

RV + Dinghy Vehicle

CONFIGURATION STUDYVISIBLE AXLES · 4
RV + Dinghy VehicleConcept diagram — not to scale
Powered Vehicle
A motorhome or recreational vehicle supplying power.
Trailer or Towed Vehicle
A passenger car pulled behind the RV by an approved towing arrangement.
Visible Axles
Observe which axle lines of the RV and towed car contact the road in the actual setup.
Plates Present
The RV and towed car are distinct vehicles and may each display a plate.
Possible Transponders Present
A device may be present in both the RV and the car. Official rules, not this guide, determine the correct handling for a vehicle under tow.
Questions to Verify Before Travel
Is the car rolling on all wheels, partly supported, or carried? Which current operator instruction applies to the device inside the car?
Records Worth Keeping
Full-combination photo kept privately, connection type, general date/route, and when the car was attached or detached.
What Changed From a Normal Trip
A second vehicle—and potentially a second device—is physically present in the moving combination.

Walk around the full combination.

At connection

Record the physical relationship.

Scenario 05

Light-Duty Tow Truck

CONFIGURATION STUDYVISIBLE AXLES · 4
Light-Duty Tow TruckConcept diagram — not to scale
Powered Vehicle
A tow truck providing power and carrying or lifting part of the load.
Trailer or Towed Vehicle
A disabled vehicle connected by wheel lift or another professional towing setup.
Visible Axles
Record the truck axle lines and which axle lines of the disabled vehicle remain on the road; the load method matters.
Plates Present
A plate may be present on both powered and disabled vehicles. Keep identifiers out of website correspondence.
Possible Transponders Present
A mounted device may exist in each vehicle. Confirm current operator requirements before the trip.
Questions to Verify Before Travel
Which end is lifted? Which wheels remain on the road? Does the return trip occur without the disabled vehicle?
Records Worth Keeping
Internal dispatch reference, private configuration image, load and unload times, and general route note.
What Changed From a Normal Trip
The tow truck’s physical road configuration can change between empty, wheel-lift, and fully carried trips.

Devices may remain inside carried vehicles as well as the powered unit. Inventory their presence before departure.
Questions to Verify Before Travel
Which wheels actually contact the road? What changes on the empty return? What operator guidance applies to devices inside carried vehicles?
