Think About Every Transponder Present in the Vehicle Combination

A towing combination can contain devices in the powered vehicle, a pulled car, or a carried vehicle. Inventory presence first; current operator rules determine what happens next.

BoundaryNo account access, activation, programming, balance review, or device testing.
Physical inventory

One combination can contain more than one device

A device can remain mounted or stored inside a vehicle even when that vehicle is not supplying power.

Powered tow vehicle

Note whether a device is physically present in the vehicle leading the combination.

Vehicle being pulled

Look for a mounted or stored device in a car traveling behind an RV or tow truck.

Vehicle being carried

A car on a flatbed or transporter may still contain its own device even though its wheels do not touch the road.

Unknown location

If you cannot complete the inventory, record the uncertainty and ask the relevant operator before travel.

Official-source context

Vehicle under tow guidance requires a current check

New Jersey E‑ZPass terms available during our October 28, 2026 review state that tags must be removed from a vehicle under tow to avoid charges connected with the towing. Confirm the latest terms and how they apply to your exact setup before travel.

Why this is narrow

A vehicle under tow is not automatically the same as every camper, trailer, flatbed load, or transported vehicle. Do not generalize one operator sentence to a different physical arrangement.

What to ask

  • Which device should be present for this exact configuration?
  • How should an unused device be handled?
  • Does guidance differ when a vehicle is rolling versus carried?
  • Which facility or operator rules apply to the route?
